My name is Laura Fox and I am a visual artist based in county Meath, primarily working in painting. My practice is concerned with what constitutes authenticity in art practice. I research and examine the subjects of influence, ownership and authorship in art historic works through the merging of traditional painting methods with Modernist and Contemporary theory. My work ‘Altermodern’ merges the Cubist works of Irish female Modernist painters Mainie Jellett, Evie Hone and the French artist Albert Gleizes. Their work offer a constant body of learnt structures which I have improvised around to create new paintings. The individual handling of paint within each artist's work is analysed through my process of repainting which investigates the values they share and the intricacies which set them apart. My remaking of existing works tamper with the role of influence in artistic production and voices concerns for ownership in art practice. In doing so, questioning what constitutes authenticity in Contemporary art today? How much of anyone's work is their work?
