My creative process begins with painting. Influenced by trips abroad I create mixed media artwork and collage that explores colour and texture. For Woven Colour, my MA Graduate collection, the architecture viewed while in Cuba was the source of inspiration. Mottled, worn surfaces exist adjacent to smooth extravagant façades, forming a striking juxtaposition. Layers of eroded paint appear as pastel washes, in contrast with rich, vibrant midtones. This artwork plays a key role in translating the source into woven cloth. The provenance of traditional fibres and hand weaving processes are central to my work. Wool yarns spun in Kilcar, Donegal provide structure and depth, while chunky mohair and bouclé inject tactility. The woven pieces invite intrigue, comfort and colour into a space.
