The book ‘Perfume’, by Patrick Suskind features the character Grenouille, a boy with a superior olfactory sense who travels through France, becoming a perfumer by trade. As time goes on however, his talent soon leads him down a dark road of obsession and desire, murdering innocent women to learn the formula of their scent. Inspired by Suskinds’ intoxicating, stylish, and witty language combined with my love for gothic horror, this stop motion film features tactile paper cut outs and light projectors. Influenced by the work of artists such as Lotte Reiniger and Kara Walker, my goal is to create visually haunting imagery, recounting the murderous tale of Grenouille.
