My art practice (painting, printing & weaving) represents personal experiences and mental health in an expressionistic, colourful style. ‘The Grieving Series' captures my intense reaction to losing two family members within a short time, particularly my cousin who passed by suicide. In the series, I feature disturbing abstract self-portraits confined in the canvas. My technique, loosely inspired by Dana Schutz, involves using colourful washes and quickly adding and wiping paint marks. The collection features black scratch paper, lino prints, and knitted pieces loosely inspired by Emily Wazak’s 'To Guide Shadows' exhibition. The knitted items required months of patient weaving. The woven pieces connect me to the memory of my cousin's woven coffin. The rhythmic ticking of knitting symbolises the slow passage of time in grief. My art aims to foster the understanding that everyone experiences grief uniquely and progresses through healing at their own pace. Art-making serves as my therapy, to express my inner turmoil visually as an attempt to make sense of my emotions.
