In my practice, I bring Sel’s World to life. My work is maximalist and draws inspiration from nostalgia, and girlhood to explore the bittersweetness of memory and the vivification of 2D objects. The subjects in my work are all people close to me, but I am often the main subject matter. I take the inspiration for the paintings I make from my own life. I try to turn everyday, banal activities look more exciting and fun. I explore a variety of materials including screen print, drawings, sewing, and sculpture. My practice utilises the fast pace of mediums like oil pastels and expanding foam. There is a sense of immediacy and childlike mark making that is used in my work, and I feel like I can achieve this best with these mediums. I also use acrylic paint, ink, glitter, canvas, and stickers. I create Sel’s World by putting my memories and my life through Sel’s Filter, which transforms these everyday activities into funky paintings. From these paintings I take 2D objects and make them 3D. As they are coming from these paintings, they are also put through this filter. As a result these objects are pretty and impractical, and familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. In Sel’s World the proportions and scale are more eccentric. As I evolve as an artist I want to include more immersive and installation work and really bring Sel’s World to life. I want the viewer to feel all the happiness, girliness and playfulness that I do whilst making my art.
