I am an interdisciplinary artist based in Cork. My work explores imaginary realms through installations involving drawing, moving image, and sound. I am inspired by music and traditional storytelling to create artworks which welcome the viewer into playful and contemplative journeys. I focus on the idea of the individual within a collective, exploring patterns of movement through animation and performance. I am motivated by these explorations to keep a flexible practice which can share ideas through process-based artworks. My latest practical project has focused on creating an ‘interactive’ animation. I drew my animation in the traditional frame-by-frame method, and created a back projection screen that could simultaneously be used as a canvas, allowing myself and viewers to ‘trace’ the animated shapes as they move around the screen. Taking inspiration from Seanchaithe and megalithic Irish sites such as Loughcrew, it has been my intention with this project to create a mythological story which thematically and visually echoes these aspects of Irish culture. I use the visual language found in Cairn T, Loughcrew, to track movements of emotional growth. Through my drawing practice I connect with ancient practices of communication and modes of visual expression which are intrinsic to us as humans. I hope that my work can interact with the public similarly to Irish folklore - evolving slowly over time, while fundamentally remaining the same.
