Amy LavertyInstruments of autopsy As a young child I had a number of surgical procedures that led me to become interested in medical photography. The meaning of autopsy is to see for oneself, (derived the Modern Latin and Greek, autopsia.)My work is showing a taboo subject, bring something new to my audience attention.Instruments of autopsy displays different types of surgical instruments used by a pathologist during a post-mortem. My Instruments have a sharp detail with smoothed lighting that catches your eyes.My work references the history of photography, the publication Hungry Eye by Walker Evans an American photographer specifically “Beauties of the Common Tool”.I have been influenced by Dr Gunther von Hagens, known for his exhibition “Body Worlds” and his tv series Autopsy: Emergency room showing a live post-mortem.I am disabled photographer I have always been fascinated with medical science, the anatomy of the body.
