Hidden in Plain Sight.
The series of panels of glass depict Homeless Luke, alone, naked, hungry, cold, and weary. He sits on the steps of Dublin’s City Hall as the world passes him by. The city is busy going about its daily business. No one sees him. No one looks. He is invisible, hidden in plain sight.
It is easier to look at the image of something rather than reality, especially with issues of poverty or homelessness. Easier again when it is removed from the actual subject. I use silver nitrate and grisaille on my glass painting to depict a beautiful image, I draw the viewer in. Inside, one realises what one is looking at: Luke, the man abandoned. I want to break the silence of a society that casts homeless people into oblivion.
“Hidden in Plain Sight” is a series I created of painted glass pieces. Using glass techniques and screen printing I depict the human figure at its most vulnerable, surrounded by the austere building, Dublin City Hall.
I portray society passing by.
