‘Horizons that glow’ is the sensory and emotional experience of personal disconnect. The project began as a poem in response to analysing the physical landscape of Shanakyle Bog and placing the person in this space. My poem was evidence of the physical disconnection between mind and body, and ‘Horizons that Glow’ became a personal exploration of anxiety and tension within the body. The abstract landscapes quickly morphed into vulnerable self-portraits. Visual motifs from the poem carried on throughout most of the work. In my final year, soft sculpture became closure for this journey. The delicate threads, intwined, tangled and tense represented the delicate nature of me. The redness of hands as they become raw. The repetition of crocheting, recreating your insides row by row until it was bigger than you. The processes were therapeutic but aimed to immerse others in that tension I feel. The physical nature of anxiety is personal but through the variety of fine art processes it has become a personal achievement to become comfortable exploring within my interdisciplinary practice. This journey is one that has fuelled my artist teacher identity and has become a symbol of how far I have come as a graduate student.
