My work endeavors to understand space, perception and the everyday world around me. I use acrylic paint due to its forgiving nature and its quick drying ability. With my recent work, I set out to challenge the idea that acrylic is a lesser medium by using analogous colours, experimenting with tone and liminality to exhibit the versatility of this medium. Each piece expresses a space or culmination of spaces and places I have encountered. My interest in expressing spaces started in second year at art college when I discovered David Hockney’s work. His use of colour, playfulness and laid-back execution is a very useful guide to a new approach for me. Most of my pieces start out as paper collages in order to work out colour schemes and general layout, this allows for a more hands-on and playful approach. During research for my dissertation, I came across the work of Josef Albers. His paperwork looked at how colours physically interacted with each other and alluded to space or depth. I carry the bright and bold colours through from my paper collages to my paintings, to create striking spaces that reverberate with the emotion of the space.
