‘faded memories’ is a five metre spiral maze that explores the complexities in forming identity. Reefing through the definitive nature of the past, a constellation of documented memories scatter across the silk walls. A story shared to remind us of the curiosity captured in our impressionable little selves, how we tell our sweet memories we shared with people and it’s thoughtful regeneration to outline who we are. With a keen interest in the psychology of people and our capacity for empathy in order to shape the world we create I found the threads of identity through introspection. Inspired by diaspora in childhood and nostalgia for individualism, within the realms of the creation of self and how we pervade our memories to fit the mould of our narrative. An uncompromising unravelling of personal histories entwined into the ever-present making of self, unveiling common differences in peoples’ autonomy. I wished to envelope the viewer to a glimpse of my childhood memories, a sort of welcome to the becoming. Through understanding the viable recollection of memories, outlining the distortion of overlapping feelings of pivotal moments in time and its visceral tale for reflection. This piece submerges the viewer into the chaos of deception that is memory. In it’s grandeur a light from the centre, four silk walls illuminate the piece where you are led by the unfinished thread to find the end of the story being told; epitomising the sense of fragility in reforming memories. This idea took root from learning about the importance of letting children play in order to grow, how toys can ring significance to how we can reflect on who we once were, a sort of grounding object infused with so many emotions. How a child at play develops the most vital skills we use in adulthood; negotiation, creativity and empathy to name a few. This piece soiled with a replication of the past, the process of renegotiating of a situation, handled with care infused with a childlike innocence, dissembling the tale of a disparate home.
