My artistic practice explores the intersections of self and sense of place, using painting as a tool to process my experiences and connect with the world around me. The landscapes that I paint are not only representations of the physical places themselves, but also reflections of my emotional and psychological relationship to them. Often working with hypersaturated pigments such as quinacridone magenta in the underpaintings, I create layers, both conceptually and materially, in which colors seep through unexpectedly in familiar landscapes. Liminality emerges as a recurring theme within the work and highlights the complexity and richness of my time spent in the west coast of Ireland. I have found that the Burren itself, with its rugged landscapes, ever-changing weather, and the constant interplay of light and shadow, epitomises the very essence of liminality. Memory, like liminality, is characterised by its fluid nature. When recalling a memory, it is not a perfect reproduction of the past; instead, it is influenced by our present state of mind, emotions, and experiences. This malleability of memory allows it to exist in a transitional state, evolving and transforming as we move through different phases of our lives. As I translate my personal encounters and sensory experiences into the visual language of painting, I invite viewers to partake in a journey that rekindles their own memories and emotions associated with analogous landscapes. This shared embodiment underscores the transformative potential of landscape painting, as it evokes a sense of place that transcends geographic boundaries and temporal limitations.
