This stained glass project is a reflection of my life up to this point, particularly examining the positive and negative masculine influences that have shaped my journey. Growing up, I was surrounded by male figures whose impact on my development was significant and complex. The positive influences, like my Granda and Dad, instilled in me values of strength and craftsmanship. Their supportive presence also provided me with a foundation of stability and inspiration. These elements are evident in my stained glass art through the use of traditional techniques and motifs that honour their legacy. However, not all masculine influences were positive. I also encountered aspects of masculinity that were challenging and at times, detrimental. Experiences with toxic masculinity, including pressure to conform to certain behaviours or the absence of emotional regulation, have shaped me. These negative aspects are expressed in my art through more modern and abstract imagery, representing these struggles and conflicts. By integrating both the positive and negative influences into my stained glass work, I try to create pieces that are not only visually striking but also personal and introspective. This project serves as a narrative tapestry, capturing the duality of my experiences with masculinity. It is a tribute to the strength and resilience I have inherited, as well as an acknowledgment of the challenges I have overcome. Through this artistic process, I aim to find balance and understanding in my work.
