Punkt. Punkt. Komma, Strich– is a hand-bound book about experimental typography and type design. It includes the serif typeface “Diagonal”, designed for this project and explores the concept of “The Line” in relation to typography as a whole. It is a response to the Student Assessment Scheme task set by the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) which awarded me an ISTD Membership Award in June 2024. I combined uncoated paper with tracing paper and bound the book with an open thread binding. It is a black and white print with orange thread. Additionally to the micro and macro typography in this book, I have designed a typeface that follows the same line of thought as the whole book. Lines that follow a serif typeface’s pattern and rules but use lines to break up some of those restrictions. With the help of the renowned typographer and type designer Erik Spiekermann, I have realized what makes a font work. "If I were to ignore the A, or change it so it doesn‘t look like an A anymore, then I‘d be making art, not communication." His view on the process of type design shaped my design in a certain way because when playing around with letters they still have to be readable in the end. As the typeface is merely a display font it has an additional glyph set. Designers can use this to shape the letters in a way they want them to look. The idea behind this typeface is to use diagonal lines that walk a different path, making it more dynamic and interesting for typographic use.
