Concerned with consumerism and its adverse environmental impact, I work primarily with sustainable, organic and/or recycled matter. This choice of materials is central to my practice. With a natural leaning towards sustainability, this direction is compounded by the ever increasing loss of natural habitat and how this can be mitigated by the resources I use, and how I use them. I am drawn to the seam where natural materials collide or merge with the built environment, how each affects the other; the confluence of this tangled space. Where does one end and the other begin?
Current work explores hempcrete as a future-facing construction material which has the dual ability to sequester and retain carbon. The execution of Hush involved a meitheal build using sustainable materials, together with mentorship from a professional hempcrete builder; then speculatively rolling the timeline forward through performance and a ‘museum’ installation.
