My work is heavily inspired by Our Lady's Asylum in Ennis, Co. Clare. It has a special place in the hearts of my family members and I wanted to pay homage to those who worked there and were patients there. I took an abstract-realistic approach to the makings of these works. I wanted to provide a second chance at life to the visuals of the asylum as it has been left to decay since March 2002. As this series progressed I found the works began to draw me in further to the building itself and to more manic visions. This contributed to the last piece in the series being a diptych that can be shown together or separated, a mirrored painting with inverted colours to portray the mania and the sanity that was present in the asylum at all times.
