As an illustrator and designer, I find inspiration in the joys that surround me: music, movies, and the companionship of animals. Within my work, I aim to capture as many emotions as possible through the use of vibrant colours and playful compositions. I plan to expand my knowledge within the creative world, post graduation, by exploring new techniques, mediums and ways of creating - I am an avid learner and enjoy experimenting. In recent times, my four dogs have had a massive influence on my work and have changed my day to day life and routines. Many of my projects over the last year have included animals, canines in particular. My love for dogs inspired me to address the challenges and underlying causes of the dog shelter crisis in Ireland for my final year project. Below is an introduction to my proudest body of work yet, “Paws and Consider”: In Ireland, dogs are regarded as ‘man’s best friend’, however our response to their welfare does not match this sentiment. The dog shelter crisis demands urgent attention as nearly all of our shelters are at maximum capacity because of repeated abandonment. My first outcome for this project included an illustrated poster series called "A Light for the Forgotten," which changes under varying lighting conditions. Each poster highlights an issue contributing to the dog shelter crisis, accompanied by an informative plaque. Additionally, I strategically placed stickers in areas around Wicklow and Dublin frequented by dog owners. These stickers are designed to educate the public in a more engaging and interactive manner - the sticker series is called "A Hunt for the Forgotten". Visitors to the @pawsandconsider Instagram can participate in a sticker hunt activity. This activity encourages the Irish public to search for the stickers, share their findings on social media, and then to potentially win a doggy hamper as a result! To show practical ways to support local dog shelters, I created step-by-step guides for making snuffle mats and braided toys, named "A Gift for the Forgotten." These interactive toys can be made with old blankets and much more which promotes sustainability and brings a new purpose to old materials. I collaborated with the DSPCA, donating several mats and toys after interviewing their staff to gain insights into the dog shelter crisis. All of these outcomes span various design spaces, including an exhibition display, simple yet informative illustrations in public spaces and inspiring community action through craft efforts. The initiative is documented and shared in detail on the instagram account @pawsandconsider.
