My graduate Aístear examines the beauty of an impermanent life, exploring the fragility of our mortality while embracing the transient nature of our existence. My collection was influenced by the Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi, which teaches us to find beauty and solace within the natural process of growth and decay, finding value in the rustic, unrefined qualities of life. In my work, I sought to distill the complexities of human experience into tangible forms. Through sculptural experimentation, I formed gestures of the ever-changing rhythms of life, weaving together elements of form, space, and emotion in their most raw and unfiltered state. These creations captured sweeping moments that evoked the passage of time, echoing the gradual evolution and decay inherent in all living things. In this collection, I poetically wove the essence of deconstructive fashion, embracing its conceptual ethos. I harnessed its radical spirit to challenge conventional aesthetics, crafting a profound narrative through every piece. Asymmetry danced through my designs, embodying the tumultuous ebb and flow of existence. Raw edges remained deliberately unpolished, echoing the philosophy of Wabi Sabi, finding beauty in imperfection and transience. Fabrics were layered and fragmented, creating a tapestry of disarray and complexity, mirroring the emotional intricacies we all encounter in life's journey. I worked with Irish linen for its inherent natural qualities and eco-friendly production. Derived from the flax plant, linen undergoes minimal processing, retaining its raw texture and earthy appearance. Its sustainable production aligns with the collection’s concept, embracing the natural world and its imperfections, fostering a deeper connection to the environment and the passage of time. Its durability reflects human resilience amidst change, each crease holding a story of time gone by. I utilized CLO 3D and Lectra Gerber to create digital prototypes throughout the design process, this innovative software reduces the need for physical samples, minimizing fabric waste. By streamlining the design process and lowering material consumption, CLO 3D contributes to more sustainable fashion practices.
