I am a multidisciplinary artist from Birr, Co. Offaly, with a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art Painting from the Limerick School of Art and Design. My recent work, ‘From Womb to World,’ explores the complexities of the female experience and motherhood, inspired by personal challenges and experiences. Feeling disconnected from my body, art has been a cathartic means of reclaiming ownership of my physical self. Through drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation, I aim to convey the nuanced interplay of the joy and challenges inherent in motherhood, striving to redefine perceptions of femininity and the body. By creating organic and suggestive forms, I encourage a reconsideration of the female form and experience. Artists such as Magdalena Abakanowicz, Ernesto Neto, and Louise Bourgeois influenced the incorporation of textiles into my work. Textiles provide a sense of domesticity, comfort, and warmth that aligns with my exploration of the maternal condition. My approach to drawing with textiles feels as intuitive as painting on a canvas. In a society that imposes rigid expectations on women, my art rejects these standards and highlights the politics surrounding the female body, encouraging deeper conversations about identity and the maternal condition.
