My name is Mandalena Miltiadi and I am a Cypriot artist based in Dublin. I work primarily with digital media, and often expand into painting and drawing. In my installation piece "Take a Second'', I explore the conflict between a person’s desire to express their struggles, ideas and aspirations, and the fear of hindering a relationship due to vulnerability. This is accomplished through self portrait photography and text.I overlay a stream of consciousness diary entry about my current struggles (written in red), and a poem which highlights how one bad story can ruin someone’s perception of you (written in blue). This layering process creates an anaglyph code which can only be read under specific conditions that the audience can trigger. Therefore, the audience can impact how the work is read and are taken on a journey starting with confusion and ending with clarity. The more you read, the more you learn about me as a person and as an artist. My work is heavily inspired by painters such as Sasha Gordon who aims to discover every version of herself through her surrealist self portraits as well as installation artists such as Jenny Holzer who uses text within an environment to relay her messages directly and indirectly.
