This series is titled Tiles in Transition, that delves into a sense of displacement from my homeland, Portugal. Primarily a painter and a printmaker, I explore themes of identity and memory, utilizing geometric shapes, composition, and colour theory as the backbone of my artistic expression. Each piece features some type of grid, serving as both a structural and symbolic foundation, reflecting the intersecting narratives and fragmented memories that define cultural dislocation. These works blend digital and traditional influences. They are a conversation between past and present, the digital vs versus the analogue, and the personal contrasted with the universal. I reference diverse sources, including imagery from Google Maps, AI-generated images, and digital painting tools, integrating these contemporary elements with the patterns that resemble traditional Portuguese tiles a symbol of my cultural heritage. The subdued blues in the works mirror the familiar overcast weather of Ireland specially in the Autumn and Winter months—a nod to my current environment and its stark contrast to my sunnier origins. In this series I confront my own experiences of cultural and geographical dislocation and create a space for others to explore the complexity of identity shaped by place, time, and technology.
