Frye's parable of culture as a conventional stage play asserts women as stagehands who remain invisible and "disloyal to civilisation". She states that the lesbian mode of seeing undercuts this play mechanism, as once the invisible woman learns that she can be seen, she learns that she too can "author perception". My work develops upon this lesbian mode of seeing, examining the lesbian conflict towards presenting as feminine and the dissociation of re-living traumatic memories as a queer woman. Using mixed media, sculpture, lens and illustration, I create disembodied accounts of my experience as a queer woman and re-illustrate my personal history from future perspectives. In projecting my experiences into an artistic space free of boundaries, I create new realities of fantastical otherness and horror which aim to investigate the inner world of queerness. Using my own image in my work, I assign myself as the central figure in the narrative, repurposing memories for artistic catharsis.
