The connective thread that binds all my work is the relationship between memory, time andidentity. My focus is teasing out the distortion that is present in the mind as one recounts amemory or an event. Cross-referencing photographs of specific moments and how they holdup against the information that floats back upon recall, painting reveals the gap that isinevitably present between these two states. Timelines converge and recede into each other, slowly unravelling the mysterious nature of the subconscious. In this body of work, I have been developing large-scale paintings, utilising highcontrasting/inverted colours, to explore temporal realities. The pictures I work from primarilycome from film and Polaroid photography and I am attached to these mediums because of theinherent ethereal and dream-like feel to them that I find to be a constant source of inspiration. The editing and selection process comes from an archive of images collected from my ownupbringing and current photo collection, allowing me to process and make concretefragments of lost time, floating somewhere, resting in the recesses of memory. The figuresbecome caught between moments in time, now suspended and skewed by the absence ofcontextual information. These paintings represent the potential of all our fuzzy recollections of life lived and life goneby.
