Growing up in a family where addiction ran deep, I witnessed first-hand its impact on both family members, my early childhood, and my transition into adulthood. Addiction, for me, acts as both a comforting companion and a suffocating presence, especially during times of mental distress and personal turmoil. Its a dynamic that affects not only myself but countless others on a day-to-day basis. This work explores the duality of addiction- the warmth and support it offers, alongside the negativity and dependence it fosters. The act of weaving, sewing, wrapping, and twisting echoes the complex nature of this relationship with addiction. Through this comforting blanket I weave together the emotions and experiences that surround my struggles with behavioural addiction. The juxtaposition of a range of materials serves to embody the intricate relationship between myself and addiction. The white stoneware symbolises my essence, while the stains of black represent the persona of addiction. Through this piece, I aim to shed light on the often difficult and stigmatized reality of addiction and its far-reaching effects on individuals and families alike.
