My work is a two channel film installation displayed across a triptych sculpture and a monitor screen. The installation also includes a soft sculpture of a green figure and lighting elements. I have been really interested in looking at the various entanglements we have with technologies – and specifically the kind of digital landscapes we occupy. For me, the motivation or what sparked this was the ambiguity of cookie collection. I began thinking about all these kind of performative traces we leave throughout the internet when engaging with different online sites. The film mirrors the fixed perspective of representational painting to allow each character’s performance to play out simultaneously. In “this” world, the prospects of progression are met with the limitations of the character’s digitally constructed world. Each character is obstructed in some way – the expectations of being an active agent within these spaces is not met, and ultimately the characters are stuck within their cycles of performativity. The installation aims to highlight some of the cycling narratives we find ourselves immersed in online. Each character is in a kind of between space, where boredom seeps into the continued digital milieu. References of art, trend, fairy tales and myth are important features within my work, and are reflected in the costumes of the characters – each carrying a symbol of something, or a hope to “fit” into something in order to achieve the standards of the circulated online image.
