I am a painter and a sound artist. In this body of work I’ve focused on oils, charcoal, and voice. Working with a process of appropriation in which I combine objects from contemporary and historical artworks, and photographs, mine and others’, I have painted and drawn collage-like amalgamations. In some cases, pieces are linked by sharing imagery with one another. Like song, my sound art is comprised of layered recordings of my voice with an echo-like trance delay added. Themes of religion and spirituality emerge in my artwork, accompanied by other interests I hold such as literature, nature and fantasy. A principle I aim for in my work is beauty; I think of it as a profound tool which can be applied skilfully to create a better world. My inspirations include Sofonisba Anguissola’s timeless realism, Michelangelo’s deeply compassionate figuration, Firelei Báez’s exquisite colours and textures and Wolfgang Laib’s grounded peacefulness. Each artist’s work resonates with me and keeps me focused on the kind of work I would like to create. In this body of work, I would like to invite people into a whimsical, dreamlike space in which they have an opportunity to explore their own beliefs and interests.
