October sees the launch of over & over + over and over, a solo exhibition of newly commissioned work by Susan Connolly, curated by Rowan Sexton in the new municipal gallery at DLR LexIcon, Dún Laoghaire. Susan Connolly’s practice has developed around the space in-between what defines painting and sculpture. Her works involve peeling and cutting back layers of paint from canvas, walls and miscellaneous structures, creating a hybrid of the average two-dimensional painting into a three dimensional object, through the use of appendages and draping of the paint itself, which has been removed from its canvas support. Connolly explores the limits and equally the limitlessness of paint, and the idea of capturing the gesture of an object through the layering of paint on a canvas and the use of site-specific installations. Making work of this nature leads to considerations of how it fits within an expanded art practice, and the experience for viewers encountering an artwork in the most unexpected way and the affect it can have; as large canvases are suspended by a series of support structures enabling the visitor to see both in front of, and behind works.
