‘Swimming to Inishkeel’ is a new solo exhibition by Malcolm McClay exploring Inishkeel Island in County Donegal and related subjects. Malcolm, originally from Stranorlar, County Donegal, is currently living in the United States where he is Professor of Art at the School of Art, Louisiana State University. It’s the first time that his work has been shown at the Regional Cultural Centre. Inishkeel is a small uninhabited Island off Narin in Donegal, accessible on foot at low tide. The island is categorised as a National Monument because of its archaeological importance dating back to the 6th century when St. Conal Coel founded a monastery there. Malcolm’s parents have a house in Narin and he describes regularly visiting the island as he grew up, first with bucket and spade, later with a windsurfer, boat or kayak and in recent years, swimming to the island. The exhibition at the RCC includes a series of meditations on the swim and the island, realised in a series of sculptural, performance video, and photographic works. It is presented in partnership with Louisiana State University, School of Art and LSU Museum of Art | Shaw Center for the Arts.
12 January – 24 March
