Willie Doherty, Aslan Gaisumov and Amar Kanwar exhibit work in ‘Opened Ground’ at Void that explores the idea of borders and territorial markings. The title derives from a collection of poems by Seamus Heaney between 1966 and 1996, spanning a turbulent time in Northern Ireland. Doherty’s photography from the 1980s and 1990s are a reminder of how borders, primarily with a political agenda, dislocate culture and the shape of people’s identities and histories: this is also explored in Kanwar’s documentation of the demarcation line between India and Pakistan. Gaisumov’s ‘People of No Consquence’ (2016) explores the displacement of Chechens from what was known as the Soviet Union to Central Asia in 1944. Together, the works act as a reminder of the human consequence of political manoeuvring.
Opened Ground: until 30 March
