For ‘Sanctuary’, Nickie Hayden draws on a poem by Peter Money, To The Lady in Pink Standing on Top of the Bridge, which describes a taxi driver’s observation of a woman standing atop the Brooklyn Bridge. While Money leaves the end of this scenario open, Hayden offers an interpretation of this perilous vantage point as a space of sanctuary, nourishment and inner strength. These themes and the elements of the poem – including its colours, shapes and textures – are used by the artist to create a new installation work for the Olivier Cornet Gallery.
