‘Schmerzbau: It’s Not All Just Misery’, an exhibition by Stephen Brandes at The Model, Sligo, looks at how comedy and tragedy can sit side by side through the juxtaposition of representation and abstraction. The invented word of the exhibition’s title references the collage work of Kurt Schwitters, to whom Brandes pays homage, exploring humour, resilience and the practice of art-making in bleak historical times.
