S ir Alfred Chester Beatty (1875– 1968) was a remarkable friend to Ireland. Mining magnate, philanthropist and one of the most successful businessmen of his generation, he is today best remembered for the magnificent collection of rare books, manuscripts and decorative arts gathered from across the world, and for the museum that he established to house and display them. When Beatty died in 1968, he bequeathed his collection to the people of Ireland, which is now housed in the award-winning museum that bears his name in the heart of Dublin Castle.
