‘Ireland and the Birth of Europe’ at the Hunt Museum tells the story of the part played by Irish scholars and missionaries in the early history of the European idea, especially their cultural role in the consolidation of the empire built by the Carolingians, which covered most of western Europe. Held as part of the EU50 anniversary of Ireland joining the European Community in 1973, the exhibition draws on the Hunt’s medieval collections.
