A casual glance through any Irish garden highlights the fact that we grow few of our native Irish trees and shrubs. Instead, our horticultural endeavours are concentrated on high-maintenance exotics like roses, lilies and ephemeral annuals – a shame, since our meadows, hedgerows and woodlands are full of spectacular natives that can easily compete with the exotics in our gardens.
