Due to Camille Souter’s versatility as a painter, her paintings can be difficult to define, writes Garrett Cormican
Born in Northampton in 1929, artist Camille Souter does not consider herself academic and wears her learning lightly. Nonetheless, she was elected a Saoi of Aosdána in 2008, has received honorary doctorates from two of our leading universities and is a member of the Geological Society of Ireland. Her interests are deep and varied. Her bookshelves are populated with volumes on Greek and Roman philosophy, theatre, history, poetry and geology. She is interested too in film, classical music, anatomy, biology, sport and even took up flying in the 1980s.
