The word ‘north’ features in the titles of Ann Quinn’s most recent exhibitions and, indeed, several paintings, and is pertinent to her practice. The ‘north’ refers to east Donegal, where the artist grew up on a remote dairy farm. Most of the paintings in this exhibition have as their subject matter this Donegal landscape, whose large, dramatic skies and open landscape have influenced Quinn’s vision as a painter. For the most part, her paintings are set in winter because the artist ‘prefers the raw mood and light of a season when the elements of nature are stripped to their bare essentials’.
