This exhibition places Irish artists of different generations alongside international figures in unexpected juxtapositions that enrich how Irish art can be understood, writes Seán Kissane
‘Take a Breath’ may seem like an unlikely title for a visual art exhibition, since the air we breathe is invisible and the action of breathing involuntary. The exhibition ‘Take a Breath’, however, makes this invisible concept visible. It is an expansive reflection on the many dimensions of breath, and how the theme can be traced through art, from the early 19th century to the present, and with a reach from Pakistan to Ireland. It reveals how breath can be a symbol of survival and resistance, while also exposing the reality that breath, like life, is fragile and easily extinguished in moments of violence or neglect.
