The Dublin Painting & Sketching Club’s 140th anniversary exhibition will be on view at the Concourse Gallery, Dún Laoghaire shortly. The exhibition will feature a number of paintings reflecting the work of early illustrious club members. The 2014 renewal commemorates the controversial 1884 exhibition in which work by James McNeill Whistler caused a stir. Whistler, who together with John Singer Sargent, was an invited exhibitor at the 1884 display, showed 25 paintings among which was ‘Arrangement in Grey and Black No 1’ – now better known as ‘Whistler’s Mother’. Some 270 works will be on show this time. Exhibiting artists include Patrick Cahill, Tom Ryan and club president Tom Scott.
