An important medieval milestone will be marked this year in the Long Room of Trinity College Dublin: the millennium anniversary of the Battle of Clontarf. In the popular imagination, the historic battle was the culmination of a long war between Viking invaders and Brian Boru. The reality was not so simple, however. The history and legend of Brian will be examined in an exhibition titled ‘Emperor of the Irish’. Pride of place will be given to the only item known to have been in Brian’s presence: the 9th-century manuscript known as the Book of Armagh.
