Crawford Art Gallery will exhibit their extensive silhouette collection in ‘The Art of the Silhouette in 19th-Century Cork’ this summer. The exhibition will include works by Augustin Edouart, a member of Napoleon’s army who lived and worked in Cork making mosaic hair works and silhouette cuttings. Only fourteen portfolios of the many thousands of Edouart’s silhouette’s – including the volume of those done in Cork – were saved when the ship he was sailing on to England sank. Stephen O’Driscoll’s portraits of prominent Cork citizens, street characters and beggar men, which he often touches up with gold or paint, complement Edouart’s works. Miniature portraits of members of the Crawford family are also on display.
