Jill Cousins selects the painting Breton Woman by Roderic O’Conor from the Hunt Museum’s permanent collection
Hanging in the Captain’s Room at the Hunt Museum in Limerick is one of at least a dozen ‘Breton Women’ paintings and drawings realised by Roderic O’Conor. Breton Woman, c. 1896-7, shows a seated woman in profile, dressed in traditional costume. She wears a simple decorated under cap, not the full Breton head-dress. Her eyes are lowered, her lips are red and her hands are clasped.
