Brian Walsh selects the Cúchulainn Shield from the collection of the County Museum, Dundalk
The Cúchulainn Shield – a large silver and copper shield mounted on a mahogany base – is both literally and symbolically central to the County Museum, Dundalk and its development. On loan from the County Louth Archaeological and Historical Society, the shield enjoys pride of place in our collection. It is a first- rate example of the Celtic Revival in Irish arts and crafts. Furthermore, the inscription, engraved in Gaelic script, reflects the restoration of early Celtic literature by invoking the legendary hero Cúchulainn.
