Ireland’s varied landscape is well represented in the UCC art collection, from the wet, green fields painted by Patrick Collins to the hauntingly rich photography of Clare Langan, but the recent acquisition of two of Miriam de Búrca’s exquisite ink drawings on man-made vellum bring an important social as well as geographical topography into focus. Her work records the cilliní graves, easily overlooked sites that were the designated resting places for unbaptised children and other members of society considered unsuitable for burial in consecrated ground.
