David Caron reveals Murphy Devitt Studios’ The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse windows in Newbridge College Chapel, Co Kildare
T he utilitarian grey brick exterior of Newbridge College Chapel, Co Kildare, with its steep pitched roof and stark concrete bell tower, is in dramatic contrast to the interior, which features a series of dazzling stained-glass windows by Murphy-Devitt Studios, Dublin, dating from 1965-1968. While the architect of the building was Ray Carroll, it is understood that the driving force behind the interior decorative scheme was most likely Fr Henry Flanagan, the Dominican priest who, aside from being the school’s assistant headmaster and art teacher, was also an accomplished sculptor.
