Michael Collins by John Lavery is one of a group of paintings of the signatories to the Anglo-Irish Treaty that the artist donated to the Hugh Lane Gallery in 1935. It is one of four paintings that Lavery made of Collins, only one of which was painted while Collins was alive.
Unravelling the sequence of carving on the stones has been challenging but has been helped by the fact that there are so many examples to study, writes Elizabeth Shee Twohig
