Roger Stalley explores the plant and flower carvings on the capitals at Corcomroe abbey, designs that were unique at that time in Europe
The ancient monastery of Corcomroe, set amidst the limestone hills of the Burren, is an evocative and inspiring place, a perfect setting for peaceful contemplation. The monks themselves have long since disappeared, and so have most of their domestic buildings, but the ruined church remains, its walls built from the soft, grey limestone visible in the landscape all around.
Unravelling the sequence of carving on the stones has been challenging but has been helped by the fact that there are so many examples to study, writes Elizabeth Shee Twohig
