Peter Rice is arguably the most celebrated Irish structural engineer of his generation. His life and works are currently celebrated at Queen’s University, Belfast. A native of Dundalk, he graduated from Queen’s in 1956 and moved to London where he began working for Arup. He spent several years in Australia on Arup’s design team for the Sydney Opera House which paved the way for his later engineering achievements, including the Centre Pompidou (Paris) and the Lloyds Building (London). In 1982 he co-founded RFR to develop innovative projects in France like the ‘Facades Bioclimatiques’ for the Museum of Science and Industry at Parc de la Villette, Paris.
