Willie Doherty is among twenty-eight artists exhibiting in ‘Walking Through Walls’ at the Gropius Bau. Encompassing painting, sculpture, photography, film, sound installation, site-specific interventions and performance, the exhibition takes the fall of the Berlin Wall as its starting point. It explores the physical presence of walls and how they function as sites of separation; the impact that physical and metaphorical walls have on those who live with them; and the struggles to overcome divisions. The exhibition also addresses the historically charged location of the gallery itself, placed among many of Berlin’s symbolic sites.
