Part of the National Gallery of Ireland’s collection since 1914, Ludovico Mazzolino’s The Crossing of the Red Sea (1521) returns to public display after recent conservation work. Presented in a purpose-built microclimate box, the painting is exhibited alongside another collection work, Lorenzo Costa’s The Holy Family (c. 1500). Costa was one of Mazzolino’s first teachers and his work illustrates the traditions the younger artist was drawing on and deviating from.
