At the National Gallery of Ireland, Mandy O’Neill’s photographic portrait ‘Diane, Larkin Community College’ won the Zurich Portrait Prize with highly commended prizes going to Kim Haughton for her portrait of J P Donleavy and to Blaise Smith for his portrait of his parents, Elizabeth and Allen Smith. In its fifth year, the competition is a celebration of contemporary portraiture and showcases artists working across a number of disciplines. O’Neill receives €15,000 and a commission to produce a new work for the National Portrait Collection. Also at the NGI, William Turner’s watercolours get their annual showing along with a selection of prints from the artist’s ‘Liber Studiorum’ series.
Zurich Portrait Prize: 6 October – 13 January 2019;
